My word for 2026

Every year I choose a word that resonates with me and that will anchor or carry me into a New Year. The word I’ve selected for 2026 is Alignment; it’s a word that invites me to check in regularly and ask myself if the choices I’m making supports the life I’m building.

I’ve been a ‘yes’ person for many years. I’m not one to pass up an opportunity to take on more responsibility at work, attend a PD event, volunteer my time with an organization whose mission I’m passionate about supporting, help a loved one and stretch myself in many directions (sometimes all at once!), as so many of us do. Recently, I’ve noticed that I’m spending more time thinking about whether the decisions I’m making consistently align with my values and energy, and move me closer to my goals (in some cases this past year they did and they were wonderful experiences and connected me with new and old friends), or whether I said ‘yes’ out of a sense of obligation or to avoid disappointing others. What felt forced and what felt intentional?

The word alignment is the opposite of forcing, but rather moving in a direction that feels congruent with goals and personal values. It’s about noticing energy and energetic alignment (what is draining me vs. what is expanding me), making decisions from the version of the person I’m stepping into vs. the one I’m outgrowing, and reshaping my environments and routines so they support the direction I’m heading towards.

Alignment invites grounding when things are shifting, making decisions with intention instead of urgency, and recognizing opportunities that match long‑term goals and values.

Do you pick a word to anchor you in the New Year? Or you a traditionalist and stick with resolutions?
