Incorporating Mindfulness into Your Daily Routine

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the moment without judgment. It can help reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance overall well-being. Here are a few simple ways to practice mindfulness and incorporate it into your daily routine:

1.) Mindful breathing: take a few minutes out of your day to focus on your breath. One way to practice mindful breathing is to sit comfortably (I like to sit on the floor crossed legged), close your eyes or soften your gaze, and take slow, deep breaths. Pay attention to the sensation of the air and entering and leaving your body. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring your focus back to your breath as your anchor. A good visualization I like to use is thinking of your thoughts as raindrop on a windshield, and then using the visualization of the windshield wipers, wiping those thoughts away. You might also find it helpful to visualize your thoughts as leaves that are on a stream slowly floating away.

2.) Mindful eating: during meals, take the time to save her each bite. Notice the flavors, textures, and aromas of your food. Eating mindfully can help you enjoy your meals more and make healthier food, choices. Sometimes our food brings about happy memories, times spent gathering with friends and family, or just brings us a sense of comfort. Feel free to enjoy reflecting on those moments as part of your mindful practice here.

3.) Mindful walking: whether you’re walking to class taking your dog for a walk, going for a hike or just being in nature, practice being fully present in the moment. Pay attention to the sensations under your feet as they touch the ground, the crunching sound of the snow or the leaves underneath your feet or perhaps the sensation of grass under your feet, the rhythm of your steps, and the sights and sounds around you. If you’re unable to leave your home for a walk, perhaps adding a birdfeeder to your backyard to enjoy the sounds of birds singing, opening your blinds and letting sunlight filter through your home, or even opening a window and letting some fresh air in for a few minutes can help bring you a sense of mindfulness and refreshment.

4.) Mindful breaks: throughout the day, take short, breaks to practice mindfulness. Put your phone down or turn off email notifications, pause for a moment, take a few deep breaths, and observe your surroundings. This can help you stay centred and focused. Remember, you do not need to earn your rest. Taking time out of your day to pause is essential to stay productive throughout your day.

Incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine can lead to a greater sense of peace and clarity throughout your day. How do you practice mindfulness throughout your day?
