Dr. Martin Seligman's PERMA Model + Flourishing

Flourishing: “the pursuit and engagement of an authentic life that brings inner joy and happiness through meeting goals, being connected with life passions, and relishing in accomplishments through the peaks and valleys of life.” (Dr. Lynn Soots)

According to Dr. Martin Seligman’s research on flourishing, the best way to move from languishing to flourishing is the PERMA model. Seligman developed PERMA as a short-hand to explain the components of what leads to flourishing. It stands for:
* Positive emotions
* Engagement
* Relationships
* Meaning
* Accomplishments

What do each of these components entail?

Positive Emotions: This element involves experiencing positive feelings such as joy, gratitude, and happiness. Cultivating positive emotions is essential for enhancing well-being and resilience. Strategies like practicing gratitude, savoring pleasant experiences, and engaging in activities that bring joy or laughter can contribute to the development of positive emotions.

Engagement: Engagement refers to being fully absorbed and immersed in an activity, leading to a state of flow. Flow occurs when individuals are completely focused on a task and experience a sense of energized focus, deep enjoyment, and fulfillment. Engaging in activities that align with one's strengths and interests can foster this state of flow, leading to a heightened sense of well-being.

Relationships: Building and nurturing positive relationships with others is a vital aspect of flourishing. Human beings are social creatures, and strong social connections provide support, belonging, and emotional fulfillment. Investing time and effort in developing and maintaining relationships, expressing empathy and compassion, and fostering positive social interactions contribute to overall well-being.

Meaning: The pursuit of meaning involves having a sense of purpose or direction in life. Finding meaning might involve identifying and living in accordance with personal values, contributing to something larger than oneself, or having a sense of fulfillment from meaningful work. Engaging in activities or endeavors that align with one's values and provide a sense of purpose can enhance flourishing.

Accomplishment: Accomplishments are achievements and successes that contribute to self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of competence. Pursuing and attaining goals provides a sense of accomplishment and contributes to individual growth and well-being. Setting realistic goals and celebrating progress can foster a sense of accomplishment and flourishing.

The idea is that carefully cultivating each of these five areas leads to greater life satisfaction. If you are consciously experiencing more positive emotions, feeling present and engaged, cultivating healthy relationships, finding meaning in what you do, and celebrating, you’re flourishing (or, living your best life).
