analog hobbies

I recently listened to a fabulous podcast episode hosted by Vic in the Meadow where she highlighted the need to incorporate more intentional analog hobbies in our lives.

Mindful analog hobbies are always important, but seem even more so in our tech world because they offer intention, remind us to stay present, and in many ways offer a deeper connection with others. They help us slow down, reset and recharge, reduce stress, enter into a state of flow, stimulate our creativity and imagination, and engage our senses in ways that screens just can’t offer.

Analog hobbies also remind us that fulfillment often comes from tactile experiences rather than constant and instant digital gratification.

If you’re finding that you’re spending more time online than you’d like, here are a few analog hobbies you might want to pick up:
* Start a gratitude journal (pen and paper!)
* Listen to cds, cassettes or vinyl records
* Go to an in-person exercise class
* Hiking, walking, running, and bird watching help connect us to the outdoors and heighten feelings of nature relatedness
* Tend to a garden (your own, a neighbours, or a community garden) or bring plants indoors to reconnect with nature
* Visit your local library and take out a physical book
* Invite friends over for a board game night
* Pick up an instrument and practice
* Take up knitting, rug hooking, needlepoint, or crocheting
* Pursue film photography
* Arts and crafts or colouring are great ways to exercise your creativity
* Jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and sudoku games help to hone your cognitive skills and promote mental stimulation
* Create wearable art such as earrings or bracelets
* Take up woodworking
* Bake something fun (host a pizza party or cookie exchange)

What is your analog hobby?
