Social Media and Well-Being
Often times we focus on the social and emotional toll social media can play on us, but have you ever thought of the ways in which social media might be used to support our relationships, assist with growth and flourishing, and help provide us a healthy sense of self?
Perhaps there is a better "all or nothing" approach. Instead of getting rid of social media or thinking all social media is bad, what if we asked, “How can social media be optimized to enhance well-being and flourishing? What are the ways in which social media can add to our well-being (not detract from it)?”
Let’s take a moment to think about the social media we currently use and regularly engage with and reflect on the following:
1.) Does social media help me create and maintain positive connections with others? Social media can provide a platform for us to connect/network with friends, family, and our community. Building and maintaining these relationships can contribute to a person's well-being by providing support, companionship, and a sense of belonging. Social media can also help individuals connect with support groups, online communities, and resources for mental health, wellness, and personal development. These networks can offer encouragement, advice, and validation, fostering a sense of understanding and connection.
2.) Is social media a source of inspiration and motivation for me? Social media can serve as a source of inspiration and motivation, with individuals sharing their personal stories, experiences, and achievements. Seeing others overcome challenges, pursue their passions, and live fulfilling lives can inspire and empower us to set and achieve our own goals. Social media platforms can also be leveraged to provide us with valuable sources of information and resources related to health, well-being, and self-care. Lastly, social media can provide a platform for us to express ourselves creatively, share our talents and passions, and showcase our unique perspectives. Engaging in creative pursuits can promote a sense of fulfillment, self-expression, and personal growth, enhancing overall well-being.
3.) Do I engage with social media in such a way that positive interactions are fostered? Social media can be a place for individuals to engage in meaningful, uplifting, and positive interactions with others. By focusing on connecting with like-minded individuals, engaging in conversations that uplift and inspire, and sharing messages of kindness and gratitude, we can cultivate a more supportive and nourishing online environment.
4.) Am I able to manage social comparison? Social media is often a highlight reel and what people post on social media is often a curated version of their lives, not actual reality. Think about the ways you currently use social media in a way that reminds you of your own unique qualities and achievements and unfollow accounts that do not uplift you.
