Setting Realistic Resolutions in the New Year
A New Year usually brings forth new goals, dreams, and habits. We outline what we want to change, alter, or keep in the coming year that is going to help support us in becoming the best version of ourself. Too often do we shy away from, or ultimately give up on, our goals and dreams because we fear rejection. I am an advocate for risk taking and to go “all in” with our goals because I believe that everything we want is on the other side of fear. With that said, and with the first day of 2025 already upon us (Happy New Year!), how might we go about setting goals intentionally so we are putting our best efforts forward? With the SMART goal framework in mind, here are a few steps to consider as you think about the goals you want to achieve in the New Year:
1.) Be Specific!
When setting resolutions, it's essential to be specific about what you want to achieve and how you’ll measure your progress. Instead of a vague goal like “I want to exercise more”, aim for something specific like “I am going to walk for 30 minutes three times a week during my lunch break”. This clarity helps you track your progress and stay motivated.
2.) Set Attainable Goals
Ensure your resolutions are realistic and attainable. Setting overly ambitious goals can lead to frustration and burnout. Reflect on your current lifestyle and commitments, and set goals that you can reasonably achieve. For example, if you’re new to meditation, start with a few minutes each day rather than aiming for a lengthy hour-long session.
3.) Break Down Large Goals
Breaking down larger goals into smaller more manageable steps makes them less overwhelming. If your goal is to eat healthier, start by incorporating one new healthy habit each week, such as adding more vegetables to your meals or setting aside some time on a Sunday to meal prep.
4.) Be Flexible and Kind to Yourself
Life is unpredictable and it's important to be flexible and exercise self-compassion with yourself if you encounter setbacks or challenges. Adjust your goals as needed and remember: progress over perfection!
5.) Celebrate Small Wins
Recognize and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. This positive reinforcement can boost your motivation and help you stay committed to your goals. Take time to acknowledge your efforts and reward yourself for your progress. This can be as simple as a pat on your back!
6.) Stay Accountable
Share your resolutions with a friend, family member, or join a support group. Having someone to share your journey with can provide encouragement, accountability, and motivation to stay on track (bonus if they share the same goal so you can be each other’s accountability partner!).
