Addressing Languishing

Languishing is a term coined by psychologist and sociologist Corey Keyes to describe a state of being stuck, stagnant, or feeling a lack of fulfillment and motivation in one's life - basically, it is a feeling of "blah" or feeling stuck, and just getting through the day. It is characterized by a sense of emptiness, disengagement, and a loss of interest or enthusiasm for activities.

Languishers have enough energy to complete their day-to-day tasks, but find little enjoyment in doing them and are not actively engaged in life. They might have an inability to get excited about upcoming projects, procrastinate, or feel as if they’re just going through the motions.

To regain a sense of purpose and meaning in life, here are some strategies you can try:
1. Identify your values: Reflect on what truly matters to you. What are the guiding principles that you want to base your life upon? Understanding your values can help you align your actions and choices with what is important to you.
2. Set meaningful goals: Set objectives that are personally significant and aligned with your values. Having goals can provide a sense of direction and purpose, giving you something to strive for.
3. Engage in activities that bring you joy: Explore activities that make you feel alive, engaged, and fulfilled. This could be hobbies, creative outlets, volunteering, or pursuing interests that genuinely interest and excite you.
4. Cultivate positive relationships: Surround yourself with supportive and positive people who uplift and inspire you. Nurturing healthy relationships can provide a sense of belonging and purpose.
5. Practice gratitude and mindfulness: Cultivate gratitude by acknowledging and appreciating the positives in your life, even the small ones. Engage in mindfulness practices like meditation or deep breathing exercises to help you stay present and connected to your inner self.
6. Seek growth and learning: Continually seek personal growth and learning opportunities. Engage in activities that help you develop new skills or expand your knowledge. Learning and growth can provide a sense of progress and purpose.
7. Take care of your well-being: Prioritize self-care activities, such as maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting quality sleep, and managing stress. Taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being can contribute to a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Remember, regaining a sense of purpose and meaning is a personal journey, and it may take time. Be patient with yourself and experiment with different strategies until you find what resonates with you most. If your feelings of languishing persist, reach out to your primary healthcare provider, mental health specialist/therapist, or trusted friend/family member.
